✦ Synopsis
The genus Acrinidia involves about 40 species. The plants are liana-like climbing shrubs, with the foliage of most of species falling o f f in autumn. They produce eatable berries with excellent taste and with high contents of vitamin C. The most widespread species is Acrinidia chinensis Planch., often called Kiwifruit. This species however, is not sufficiently frost-resistant and therefore its cultivation under conditions of Central Europa (round 50"n. lat.) is being introduced very slowly. In some Eastern countries the actinidias are cultivated already for several centuries. The most frequently cultivated species are: Actinidia kolomikra Max., Actinidia arguta Planch. and further species. Even I. V. MICHURIN occupied himself with their improving. [I]. This grower describes his experiences and results of his labours as follows: "Actinidias are highly resistant against frost and plant-pests. They are also very fertile. "He states further: "One can with absolute certainty say that the actinidias will occupy main place among fruit-plants in the future" [2].
