โฆ Synopsis
It is with great pleasure that we are able to announce that the two papers: I. Hawkes and M. Mellor, 1970. Uniaxial testing in rock mechanics laboratories. Eng. Geol., 4(3): 177-285 and M. Mellor and I. Hawkes, 1971. Measurement of tensile strength by diametral compression of discs and annuli. Eng. Geol., 5(3): 173-225, have been selected to receive the "Special Award" of the NAS-NAE U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics. This is the first time that this award has been made, it only having been instituted in 1972. It will only be given when there is an outstanding contribution to rock mechanics and will not be given annually as are the committee's other awards. The citation states that the Hawkes and Mellor award is for "outstanding contributions to laboratory test methods". It was presented at the 14th Annual Symposium on Rock Mechanics in June 1972.
