March 2004 55 NAS announces award winners The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) will present 16 scientists with awards at the association's 141 st annual meeting next month. Yoel Fink of MIT wins the $15 000 Award for Initiatives in Research, which is presented to innovative young scientists in fields supporting information technology. Fink has been chosen for his "pioneering contributions and ingenuity in the creative design and development of photonic materials and devices". The NAS Award in Chemical Sciences goes to Robert G. Parr of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The prize recognizes Parr's efforts in applying density functional theory to chemistry. New president at SPIE James W. Bilbro of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) has taken office as the new president of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. Bilbro is special assistant for optics at MSFC, providing long-term planning and developing contacts with industrial and academic consortia. SPIE's new vice president is Malgorzata
