โœฆ Synopsis

Immediate early gene (IEG) expression is dynamically regulated in brain neurons, in response to natural activity, and linked to neural plasticity. Because of the demonstrated importance of synaptic activity in neuronal function and development, it is anticipated that IEGs contribute to adult and developmental cortical plasticity. The IEG response includes proteins that function as transcription factors, as well as enzymes and growth factor proteins that can directly modify neuronal and synaptic function. An understanding of the mechanistic contribution of the IEG response to neuronal plasticity will provide information not only about basic developmental processes, and their disturbances in mental retardation, but may also contribute to new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for these developmental disorders.

In dog thyroid cells, insulin or IGF-1 induces cell growth and is required for the mitogenic action of TSH through cyclic AMP, of EGF, and of phorbol esters. HGF per se stimulates cell proliferation and is thus the only full mitogenic agent. TSH and cAMP enhance, whereas EGF phorbol esters and HGF r

In addition, the novelty of stimuli activates attention-related processes that facilitate memory formation. To determine the involvement of limbic and ne

The mRNA expression pattern for four different immediate early genes was examined dynamically in rat brain after administration of phencyclidine (PCP; 0.86 or 8.6 mg/kg) or MK801 (0.1 or 1.0 mg/kg). Following each treatment, the expression of cfos, cjun, junB, and zif268 mRNA changed distinctively a
