## Abstract The negative ion mass spectra of methanol, methanol‐__d__ and trideuteromethanol have been measured at 70 eV. Use of deuterated methanols has enabled the ion at __m__/__e__ 31 to be identified as CH~3~O^βˆ’^ and not CH~2~OH^βˆ’^. Isotope effects have been determined for H^βˆ’^ and D^βˆ’^ format
