✦ Synopsis

center [early systole] and bottom [end diastole]) and magnitude images (Figure, top] were reprocessed to produce anatomically related dynamic movies of brain motion. Use of agar phantoms and the skin provided an estimate of the head motion component (if present) to be eliminated in the measurement of the caudocranial and anteroposterior brain velocities. A group of 10 volunteers were studied. CSF pulsatility was clearly observed. In addition. there was significant motion within the brain parenchyma itself. Two patterns of motion were observed: a central expansion from the ventricles outward and a more generalized wavelike motion. Although the central pattern is most likely secondary to CSF pulsation, the presence of a more generalized vascular pulsation component cannot be excluded. This finding is in concordance with early observations of brain motion (1) but may contradict more recent studies (2). Brain motion was most significant immediately following the cardiac R wave, and was most quiescent from about 500 msec after the R wave until the next cycle. These data were helpful in the design of optimal diffusion imaging sequences. Future work will involve comparisons of different types of breathing or breath holding and three age-group populations to investigate these important phenomena further.
