β¦ Synopsis
To Bind or Not to Bind, Is That the Question?
A subjective view is given of the importance of the chemical nature of the electrical contact between molecules, especially r-bonded ones, and metals or semiconductors in hybrid molecular/non-molecular structures, for their properties and for device behavior. We first consider molecules on both bulk metal and semiconductor surfaces, and on semiconductor quantum particles, including the effect of capping. This then provides a basis for looking at systems where molecules are the ΒͺglueΒΊ between two electronic materials, which can both be quantum particles, or bulk surfaces. We suggest that, if the chemical nature of the contacts in molecule-containing device structures can be controlled, that this will significantly expand the possibilities to tailor the behavior of such devices.
