✦ Synopsis

The interface between corroding steel and cement paste containing chloride, with and without condensed silica fume, was studied. For specimens containing only portland cement an interfacial film of large crystals of lime (CH) covered most of the steel surface. Even a 16% replacement of the portland cement with silica fume did not change this feature very much. However, only the specimens with silica fume developed corrosion.

This indicates that the pore solution probably contained a higher CI-/OHratio for a given total chloride content.

Experimental evidence in support of hollow shells in the microstructure of cement paste is presented. The experimental observations show that hollow shells are not artifacts caused by drying or particle pull-outs, but are actually an important mode in the hydration of cement.

The penetration of chloride ions into hardened cement pastes (hcp) has been measured by chemical analysis, X Ray diffraction and thermal analysis. The penetration of chloride depends on the permeability; thus the greater the w/c ratio the greater is the penetration. The concentration of chloride in

Several researchers have been using an X-ray diffraction technique to examine the orientation of calcium hydroxide crystals at the interface between cement paste and aggregate. Recently, however, the use of X-ray diffraction for this purpose has been called into question because the goniometer sweep
