✦ Synopsis

Experimental evidence in support of hollow shells in the microstructure of cement paste is presented. The experimental observations show that hollow shells are not artifacts caused by drying or particle pull-outs, but are actually an important mode in the hydration of cement.

The interface between corroding steel and cement paste containing chloride, with and without condensed silica fume, was studied. For specimens containing only portland cement an interfacial film of large crystals of lime (CH) covered most of the steel surface. Even a 16% replacement of the portland

In assessing the effect of mica reinforcement on cement paste microstructure, modifications to pore-size distribution, porosity, ~on-evaporable water content, and CH particle size distribution were observed for samples hydrated for up to five years. This paper demonstrates that the microstructure of hydrated cement paste varies with distance from an exposed, drying face. The influence of Sea, ground, Nile and drinking waters on the microstructure of some hydraulic cements is investigated by means of X-ray diffraction analysis. The calcium sulfo-and carboaluminate hydrates form well with a water cement ratio of 2. Seawater leads to the precipitation of gypsum. The
