✦ Synopsis

Several researchers have been using an X-ray diffraction technique to examine the orientation of calcium hydroxide crystals at the interface between cement paste and aggregate. Recently, however, the use of X-ray diffraction for this purpose has been called into question because the goniometer sweeps through only a single a-c, thus missing any crystals which are not oriented with either a (0001) plane or a (101"1) plane parallel to the interface. This paper describes the degree of preferred orientation of calcium hydroxide crystals using pole figures. The results confirm the validity of the X-ray diffraction technique and provide new information about the nature of the cement paste-aggregate interface.

This research programme is based on a mixing technique in which concrete is produced by adding water at two separate times. In the first stage; aggregate and a water content of 25% of the specified weight of cement were mixed for 30 sec; cement was then added and mixed for a further 60 sec. This paper deals with the effect of the leaching process of cement based materials on their mechanical properties. This process induces mainly a total leaching of Ca(OH), and a progressive decalcification of C-S-H which leads to a gradient of C/S ratio in the leaching zone. In a previous work, we ve
