✦ Synopsis

The integral total collision cross section for tie H 2 has been measured with an absolute accuracy of -+ 1% to -+4% between 0.14 meV and 2.9 eV. The data have been fitted by a spherical symmetric multiparameter Morse-splinedispersion potential, which agrees well with results of ab initio calculations at short distances. The long range attraction can be described by the theoretical van der Waals constant C 6, if the dipole-quadrupole interaction -Cs R -a with C 8 = 41 au is taken into account. The potential has one bound state for every possible isotopic combination.

The widely quoted semiclassical inversion of the 4He-4He total scattering cross section data in the region of the low repulsive wall is shown to be inconsistent with both a recent ab initio and a semi-empiriui potential representing the helium interatomic forces. We report converged quantum total integral reactive cross sections for the reaction F+H,+HFt H, for initial rotational states jl=O and I, using a time-dependent method. Our results are compared to classical results and to the experimental results of Nemnark et al. Strong quantum effects are found in
