The emission spectrum of VN has been investigated in the 3400-19 400 cm -1 region using a Fourier transform spectrometer. The bands were observed from the reaction of VOCl 3 vapor with active nitrogen. In addition to the previously known transitions of VN, several new bands observed in the visible a

✦ Synopsis
Lifetimes of NF b 'Z + (2.33 ms) and a 'A (2.85 s) in solid argon have been determined by pulsed laser excitation of the b state. The integrated (0,O) band intensities of the b-X, b-a, and a-X transitions are 1 .OO, 2.9 k 0.6, and 2.7 f 0.6, in relative units. It is concluded that cascading from b 'Z + to a 'A is purely radiative within these error limits. While the b-+X and a-+X transition rates compare favorably with gas-phase data and theoretical calculations, the b-a transition rate is enhanced by four orders of magnitude in the matrix.

Transition probabilities for the B 1 + -X 1 + and the B 1 + -A 1 electronic systems are presented for v = 0-4 and J = 0-150 in each electronic state. The functional form of the electronic transition moment for the B-X transition is taken from published ab initio results. The B-A moment is assumed to
