✦ Synopsis

Emission spectra of the b 1 ⌺ ϩ 3 X 3 ⌺ Ϫ and a 1 ⌬ 3 X 3 ⌺ Ϫ transitions of SO in the near-infrared spectral region were studied at high spectral resolution with a Fourier-transform spectrometer. The 0 -0 band of the b 3 X system was measured at high signal/noise and four magnetic dipole branches were observed in addition to the previously known five electric dipole branches. From the relative line intensities and the radiative lifetime of the b state, the electric and magnetic transition moments were determined to be 0 ϭ Ϯ0.0042 ea 0 , 1 ϭ ϯ0.0047 ea 0 , and M ϭ 0.16 B . All nine electric dipole branches were observed in the 0 -0 band of the a 3 X transition. Fixing the rotational constants of the X 3 ⌺ Ϫ ground state to microwave values, the following parameters were obtained for the a 1 ⌬ state (in cm Ϫ1 ): v 00 ϭ 5862.1853(1), B 0 ϭ 0.71033746(37), D 0 ϭ 1.16814(46) ϫ 10 Ϫ6 (with H 0 fixed to Ϫ3.99 ϫ 10 Ϫ13 ), where the numbers in parentheses are the standard deviations of the parameters.
