β¦ Synopsis
Mass screening for neuroblastoma has been performed nationwide in Japan, using highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) since around 1989. A good cost-performance ratio is probably the most important economic consideration in performing such mass screening programs. Epidemiological data were obtained from HPLC mass screenings in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, and data concerning the medical cost, from patients treated at Sapporo National Hospital. Compared with unscreened group (100,000 infants), a group screened by HPLC requires an additional Β₯59,800,000 ($478,400). The cost required to save one additional life is Β₯16,610,000 ($132,890) on the assumption that we can expect to save 3.6 lives per 100,000 by HPLC screening. In Japan, where the annual number of births is decreasing, reducing the child mortality is clearly important. Lives of children can be saved at a relatively low cost by simply using an HPLC mass screening program. Med.
