The magnetic circular dichrokm (MCD) for the three low-energy absorption bands of the Eu(C2H$!i04)3 -VH20 crystal has been measured at room temperature. It may$e well understood from the MCD as well as from other experimental results that two of these bands, 7F1 + Do and 7Fo -+ D1, are of magnetic d

✦ Synopsis
MCD measuremepts have been used to estimate the ground-and excited-state magnetic moments and zero-field splittings for the 4A2 -'E('D) km&ion in CssCoCls. Most of the recenrextensive work on magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) [l] has concentrated on situations in which the linewidths have been large corn-* pared to both the Zeeman splitting and kT. The widely used formalism of Buckingham and Stephens [2] contains approximations which are only valid under these conditions. When measurements are made on single crystals at 4.2'K and fields of about 50 kG it may be
