We describe the chemical synthesis and spectral properties of a long-lifetime luminescent probe for membranes. A ruthenium metal-ligand complex was covalently coupled to the amino group of phosphatidyl ethanolamine. When incorporated into model membranes, this probe displays decay times near 500 ns.
