โœฆ Synopsis

We describe the chemical synthesis and spectral properties of a long-lifetime luminescent probe for membranes. A ruthenium metal-ligand complex was covalently coupled to the amino group of phosphatidyl ethanolamine. When incorporated into model membranes, this probe displays decay times near 500 ns. Importantly, the probe displays polarized emission and can be used to study membrane motions on the microsecond timescale.
