✦ Synopsis

A computer calculation was performed for the particle scattering factors and relative change of the scattered light by randomly and completely oriented cylindrical particles with greatest dimension not exceeding 3 and axial ratios from 0.1 to 10. The Rayleigh-Gans approximation was used. The dependence of the particle scattering factor and the relative change of the scattered light on the dimensions and axial ratios are presented in tables and graphs which indicate those cases where particles cannot be treated as strongly elongated. Comparison of the results with the preliminary measurements on P. aeruginosa--1 IB cells showed poor agreement which was attributed to deviations from Rayleigh-Gans theory.

Light scattering is frequently employed for the examination of colloidal particles. In recent years the advantages of working close to refractive index match between medium and particle have been exploited to examine particle diffusion in these systems. ## Abstract Based on the reciprocity theorem, the light scattering from a spherical particle above a slightly dielectric rough surface is studied. The theoretical formulation that accounts for the near‐field interaction between a spherical particle and a rough surface is given, the analytical solut
