✦ Synopsis

We report the first observation of the electronic spectrum of the free radical MgCCH. This molecule was prepared in a supersonic expansion by laser ablation of magnesium in the presence of methane. A strong laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectrum was found in the 415-440 nm region and was assigned to part of the ,~2H-~(2,E+ system. The spectrum is dominated by a single vibrational progression of interval 552 cm ~ which has been assigned to the Mg-C stretch in the ,~ state. A preliminary rotational analysis has shown that the rotational constant, B0, in the ,A 211 state is larger than that in the )( 2~ + state, indicating a stronger Mg-C bond in the excited electronic state.

Muon level-crossing spectroscopy has been applied to the study of muonium-substituted radicals formed in liquid benzene, hexadeuterobenzene, furan, 2-metbylpropene, 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene, and gaseous ethene. The magnitudes and signs of the proton and deuteron hyperfine constants are reported, and ar

Dispersed fluorescence spectra of the zinc monoethyl radical are presented. These have allowed vibrational frequencies of several modes in the ground electronic state of this molecule to be determined for the first time. In particular, substantial activity in both the Zn-C stretch and the Zn-C-C ben
