✦ Synopsis
The material treated combines in great part previous contributions to various journals together with original observations heretofor unpublished. The collaboration of specialists, particularly taxonomists of several of the large or aberrant groups, is fully acknowledged in the introduction. The author has organized his general subject into six parts: I Environment; I1 Biology; I11 Flora and Fauna; IV Monographic studies; V Biogeography; and VI Dynamic and Historical Considerations. Part I includes five chapters on history, methods, topography, ecological factors and influence of sand on faunal types. Part I1 in seven chapters covers the morphological characters and general biology of the psammon. Part I11 is a taxomomic analysis of 22 groups above (with two exceptions) the taxon of order. This section contains ths only reEerences, two short paragraphs, to psammic fungi and algae. Part IV considers in three chapters a thorough analysis of a family, a sub-family, a species, and a subspecies (four different forms, unique to the biotope. It seems to this reviewer that Part IV might well have been omitted especially since these chapters were published varbatim elsewhere and add little as presently constituted to the book as a whole. Part V contains a fairly detailed analysis of the biogeography of the psammon of the Catalanian French coast, the coast of Algiers, the Tunisian Coast, beaches along the Italian Coast, and the Gulf of Gascoigne, with a chapter devoted to each area. The last section, Part VI, is in many ways the most important in the book, bringing together in four chapters the author's views on the relationships, general ecology and fundamental unity of fauna, flora, and environment of the interstitial biocoenose throughout the world.
