Several homopolyesters were prepared by thermal polycondensation of N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide with various acetylated diphenols. The syntheses of several thermotropic poly(ester-imide)s were repeated by the "silyl-method". The resulting poly(ester-imide)s were characterized by elemental ana

✦ Synopsis
A~tract--Two imide monomers were prepared starting from 4-nitrophthalic anhydride, viz. N-(4'-carboxyphenyl), 4-(4'-carboxyphenoxy)phthalimide and its dimethylester. Nematic aromatic polyesters were prepared by polycondensation with chlorohydroquinone or phenylhydroquinone. Four polyesters were obtained by polycondensation with aliphatic diols. These "aliphatic polyesters" exclusively form isotropic melts but a smectic layer structure in the solid state. All the polyesters were characterized by elemental analyses, inherent viscosities, WAXS powder patterns, DSC measurements and optical microscopy.

A series of chiral copoly(ester-imide)s was prepared by polycondensation of N-(Ccarboxy-pheny1)trimellitimide with mixtures of isosorbide and phenylhydroquinone. All copolyesters are non-crystalline. They form a cholesteric melt, when containing more than 50 mol-% of phenylhydroquinone. Containing 5
