✦ Synopsis

Several homopolyesters were prepared by thermal polycondensation of N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide with various acetylated diphenols. The syntheses of several thermotropic poly(ester-imide)s were repeated by the "silyl-method". The resulting poly(ester-imide)s were characterized by elemental analyses, inherent viscosities, i.r.-spectroscopy, WAXS and DSC-measurements, optical microscopy with polarized light and thermogravimetric analyses. As a consequence of different bond angles, a mobile nematic melt was found for the polyester of 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl-ether but not for 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylsulphide, bisphenol-A or phenol-phthalein. A mobile nematic melt was also observed for the polyester of 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene, whereas isomeric dihydroxynaphthalene yielded immobile birefringent phases or an isotropic melt. Comparison with analogous homopolyesters of terephthalic acid revealed lower melting points and considerably broader nematic phases for the poly(ester-imide)s.
