The laser absorption spectroscopy of molecular ions using the velocity-modulation technique has been employed in the UV region. The absorption source was a cw single-mode laser beam from an extra-cavity frequency doubling unit associated with a dye laser. The high-resolution spectrum of the First Ne

✦ Synopsis
(\mathrm{S}{2}) was generated by photodissociation of (\mathrm{S}{2} \mathrm{Cl}{2}) and the (B^{3} \Sigma{u}^{-})state was investigated for (v^{\prime}=) (0 . .8) by laser excitation spectroscopy from the ground state. Bands were detected and assigned up to rotational levels (N^{\prime}=50). For both states accurate parameters were determined, which allow the description of the (B-X) spectrum for (N \leqslant 20) within the errors of measurements. For higher quantum numbers deviations from perturbations become severe. A new set of molecular parameters for the (X^{3} \Sigma_{\bar{g}}^{-})ground state is given from a simultaneous fit of optical and millimeter spectra. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc
