Treatment of DG1b, beta-Gal-(1----3)-beta-GalNAc-(1---- 4)-[alpha-Neu5Ac-(2----8)-alpha-Neu5Ac-(2---- 3)]-beta-Gal-(1----4)-beta-Glc-(1----1)-Cer, with dicyclohexylcarbodi-imide in anhydrous methyl sulfoxide affords 95-98% of GD1b-dilactone. The carboxyl groups of the two sialic acid units are invol

β¦ Synopsis
ABSTRACX Gangliosides that contain the disialosyl residue a-NeuSAc-(2-+8)-a-NeuSAc-(2+3)-can lactonize in the presence of traces of acid and this reaction has been studied in detail on GDlb {~-Gal-(1+3)-/3-GalNAc-(l-+4)-[cY-NeuSAc-(2-+8)-~-NeuSAc-(2+3)]+Gal-( l-+4)-/3-Glc-(l-+1)-Cer}.
Lactonization occurs rapidly at a proton-ganglioside molar ratio of <l. At equilibrium, the ratio of GDlb to its lactone is 3:7. The data suggest the possibility that a proton-driven lactonization of gangliosides may occur in vivo.

A blue shift of the tryptophan fluorescence emission spectra of cholera toxin or the B protomer is induced by disialoganglioside GDlb with a capacity similar to that of monosialoganglioside GM,. Both gangliosides were also capable of decreasing or reversing the fluorescence quenching by iodide ion o
## Abstract A general method for the trifluoromethylation of imines by using Me~3~SiCF~3~ under acidic conditions is described. The reaction is promoted by hydrofluoric acid generated in situ from KHF~2~ and either TFA or TfOH. A new chemoselectivity pattern was achieved, as the C=N bond was found
We have studied the cellular distribution of gangliosides GD1b, GD3 and GM1 in rat cerebellum by immunostaining, using monoclonal antibodies and confocal microscopy. Antibodies against astroglial, neuronal and synaptic vesicle associated molecules were used for colocalization analyses. In the gray m
The novel effects of gangliosides from human brain on the number of nuclei of nerve cells and neurite outgrowth were studied in cultures of human neuroblastoma cell lines GOT0 and NB-1. Ganglioside GQlb at a nanomolar level stimulated cell proliferation and neurite outgrowth during culture for 24 ho
