The reaction between benzyl chloride and aqueous ammonium sulfide was carried out in an organic solvent -toluene, using tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as phase transfer catalyst (PTC). Two products, namely dibenzyl sulfide (DBS) and benzyl mercaptan (BM), were identified in the reaction mixture.

The reaction of benzoyl chloride and sodium carboxylate using pyridine 1 -oxide (PNO) as an inverse phase-transfer catalyst in a system of the two phases HZ0 and CH&& was investigated. Carboxylate ions including formate, acetate, propionate, 2methylpropanoate, pentanoate, hexanoate, heptanoate and o
