✦ Synopsis

Ion-molecule reactions at very low energies (<lo-* eV) are investigated quantum-mechanically, taking the reaction H-+H+H2 t e as an example. Quantum effects, the zero-energy limit of the cross section, and the validity of an orbiting model are examined. Tbe orbiting model is found to be satisfactory. However, since the potential is much more attractive than the polarization force, the orbiting cross section is larger than the Langevin value. When the strength of the reactive interaction is artificially reduced, resonance effects become Important.

The reaction Cs(7P) +Hr-+CsH+H at threshold is studied in a crossed-beam experiment, with laser excitation of Cs atoms and laser-induced fluorescence detection of the CsH product. Variations of the total cross section with Hz kinetic energy are obtained for various rotational levels of CsH; they con
