โฆ Synopsis
When the intracellular amino acid pool is prelabelled and subsequently chased in non-radioactive medium, the radioactivity of the amino acid pool is not found to have been incorporated into protein.
(2) Leucine transport into Hela cells is reduced in the presence of 10 mM valine in the medium. This results in a lower specific radioactivity of leucine in the intracellular amino acid pool. However, neither the overall rate of protein synthesis nor the incorporation of radioactive leucine into protein is affected.
From these experiments it is concluded that incoming amino acids entering the intraceUular amino acid pool are not used for de novo synthesis of protein.

## Abstract Mitotic HeLa cells (M cells) synthesize protein at about 25% of the rate of S phase cells. This decrease in protein synthesis is due to a reduction in the rate of initiation. However, extracts prepared from M cells are almost as active in protein synthesis as S cell extracts. Both cell
The rate of DNA synthesis in HeLa S3 cells, as measured by incorporation of C14-labeled thymidine, is strongly dependent on protein synthesis at all times during the S phase. The relation between the rate of DNA synthesis and the rate of protein synthesis is linear when measured two or three hours a
