Abstract
A model is presented for the development of membranes upon the contact of polymer solutions with nonsolvents under coagulating conditions in which the membranes increase in thickness with time. Good support for the model is presented in the form of experimental measurement of solvent diffusion rates in the formation of porous membranes from polyvinyl chloride blends with polyurethanes using dimethylformamide as the polymer solvent and water as the coagulant. Qualitative observations are described for the effect of solvent/nonsolvent interdiffusion rates on the pore structures of the membranes.
