✦ Synopsis

We predict that the action of recently revealed mixed quadratic nuclear potential terms in degenerate ground electronic states may lead to infrared and Raman activation of vibrational modes previously classified as inactive as well as to unexpected Raman depolarization ratios. In conjunction with JT interactions these terms may give rise to striking enhancements of infrared and Raman intensities of non-JT modes.

## Abstract DFT calculations were carried out to study heme complexes with diatomic ligand (CO, NO, or O~2~) and __trans__‐imidazole ligand. The optimized electronic ground states of CO, NO, and O~2~ adducts are singlet, doublet, and open‐shell singlet, respectively. For O~2~ adduct, the open‐shell
