Abstract
A treatment of the BetheโSalpeter equation leads to additional shortโrange interaction terms in the effectiveโmass equation of the exciton theory. These nonโHermitean splitting terms decrease the excitation energies and cause the triplet energy to be the first to become zero if the energy gap is reduced.
