Abstract

Normal human peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes were induced to become cells that secrete rheumatoid factor after culture with aggregated IgG, but not monomeric IgG. A plaque‐forming cell assay was used to detect cells that secrete antibodies to IgG. Anti‐haptenated–sheep red cell plaque‐forming cells were also induced by aggregated IgG, suggesting that aggregated IgG may have induced plaque‐forming cells polyclonally. Polyclonal stimulation of mononuclear leukocytes by aggregated IgG may be a mechanism for the in vivo stimulation of cells that produce rheumatoid factor.
