β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
We used ^17^O NMR imaging techniques to measure the H~2~^17^O concentration in a 0.8βml voxel in the cat brain following injection of an arterial bolus of enriched H~2~^17^O and during inhalation of enriched ^17^O~2~. We also measured the H~2~^17^O concentration in arterial blood during ^17^O~2~ inhalation. The data from the first measurement were used to calculate the blood flow in the voxel. The data from all three measurements were combined to calculate the oxygen consumption in the voxel. The values of cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption calculated with ^17^O NMR techniques agree reasonably well with values calculated for a similar region of the cat brain using autoradiographic techniques. The use of a phase mapping technique for detection of brain perfusion is described. The method was used in a patient with epilepsia partialis continua and displayed an area of abnormal perfusion in the frontal lobe during the ictal phase. Following improved treatment the perfusion pattern was near n

## Abstract Quantitative determination of cerebral blood volume (CBV) is important for understanding brain physiology and pathophysiology. In this work, a novel approach is presented for accurate measurement of absolute CBV (aCBV) using vascularβspaceβoccupancy (VASO) MRI, a bloodβnulling pulse seq
## Abstract Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured in cat brain __in vivo__ at 2.7 T using ^2^H NMR to monitor the washout of deuterated saline injected into both carotid arteries via the lingual arteries. In anesthetized cats, global CBF varied directly with __P__aCO~2~ over a range of 20β50 mm Hg
