Reversible and irreversible sorption of boron trifluoride by a suite of low-and mediumvolatile bituminous (caking) coals was investigated. Extraction of irreversibly sorbed BF3 with diethyl ether was used to test the hypothesis that BF3 interacts with coal by forming adducts. An approximately rectil
at room temperature. The mixture was added to water (500 ml) and the precipitated derivatives filtered. The acetylated sample was freeze-dried with benzene. The increase in solubility of the coal-derived liquids in benzene and chloroform owing to silylation and acetylation are shown in Tables 1 an
Reaction of coal with boron trifluoride destroys caking properties without simultaneously affecting the intensities of 'aromatic' i.r. absorption bands between 700 and 900 cm-l and/or lowering the yields of chloroform-soluble matter obtainable after rapid heating to ~400'C. It is therefore contende
