โœฆ Synopsis

Reversible and irreversible sorption of boron trifluoride by a suite of low-and mediumvolatile bituminous (caking) coals was investigated. Extraction of irreversibly sorbed BF3 with diethyl ether was used to test the hypothesis that BF3 interacts with coal by forming adducts. An approximately rectilinear but inverse relation between residual sorbed BF3 and the free swelling index was found.

Reaction of coal with boron trifluoride destroys caking properties without simultaneously affecting the intensities of 'aromatic' i.r. absorption bands between 700 and 900 cm-l and/or lowering the yields of chloroform-soluble matter obtainable after rapid heating to ~400'C.
