The mixture was added to water (500 ml) and the precipitated derivatives filtered. The acetylated sample was freeze-dried with benzene.

The increase in solubility of the coal-derived liquids in benzene and chloroform owing to silylation and acetylation are shown in Tables 1 and2. The solubility was measured by mixing 1.0 g of sample in 10 ml of the solvent at room temperature for 24 h. The mixture was filtered through a 5 pm teflon filter. The resulting filtrate and residue was dried and weighed. The total recovery varied from 97 to 99 wt %.
