SMAD proteins are downstream targets of serine/threonine kinase receptors of the transforming growth factor ␀ (TGF␀) superfamily. Ligands activating these receptors regulate cell growth, differentiation and development in many tissues of various organisms. In mammals eight different Smad genes are k
