Ilya Répine (1844 Chuguyev –1930 Kuokkala)Ilya Répine était le plus doué du groupe que l'on appelait en Russie «Les Ambulants ». Dès l'âge de douze ans, il entre à l'atelier d'Ivan Bounakov pour apprendre le métier de peintre d'icônes. La représentation religieuse restera très importante pour lui. Il étudie ensuite à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Pétersbourg de 1864 à 1873 sous l'enseignement de Kramskoï. Il étudie deux ans à Paris où il sera fortement influencé par la peinture en plein air, mais sans pour autant devenir impressionniste, style qu'il jugeait un peu trop éloigné de la réalité. Épris de culture picturale française, il s'efforça de comprendre le rôle de celle-ci dans l'évolution de l'art contemporain.
