Ilya Repin was a leading Russian painter and sculptor who is most famous for his involvement with the Russian Itinerant movement. This avant-garde movement rebelled against the formalism and tradition of the official Academy of Fine Arts and proclaimed the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity.
