## Abstract The fragmentation pattern of 30 compounds belonging to different classes of the lignan family was studied by liquid chromatography‐electrospray ionization ion‐trap mass spectrometry. On the basis of the observed fragmentation patterns, identification of different types of lignans was ac

✦ Synopsis
A laser desorption/ionization ion trap mass spectrometer was developed and used for the identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and pesticides, DDT and BHC, condensed on a single microparticle. The excimer (XeCl, 308 nm) laser was adopted for the desorption and ionization of the material from the particle surface and the resulting ions were analyzed with an ion trap mass spectrometer. The mass spectra obtained from laser desorption/ionization were similar to the results from electron impact ionization. Detection sensitivity was reached to sub-nanogram/ particle order when a 5 mJ/pulse of energy of the laser was used. Tandem mass spectrometry was applied to the characterization of DDT by way of collision-induced dissociation of the parent ion with ambient He buffer gas.
