## Abstract Steroid sex hormones and related synthetic compounds have been shown to provoke alarming estrogenic effects in aquatic organisms, such as feminization, at very low concentrations (ng/L or pg/L). In this work, different chromatographic techniques, namely, gas chromatography/mass spectrom

✦ Synopsis
Conditions are reported for the reverse-phase HPLC analysis of gossypol and of someof its derivatives, including anhydrogossypol, gossypolone, gossypol hexaacetate, and Schiff's base derivatives. It is shown that field desorption (FD) and chemical ionization (Cl) mass spectrometry have advantages over electron impact (El) mass spectrometry tor the characterization of these compounds and that combined high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LWMS), especially when used in the CI mode, is particularly effective.
