✦ Synopsis

will show a series of peaks and valleys which may be as much as 0.005" in height. Unless the paint coating is sufficiently thidc to cover these high spots, they will protrude through the paint film and form focal points of corrosion; this is seen in the rust spotting, typical on steel painted with an inadequate process. A paint process consisting of a red lead/linseed oil primer followed by a normal undercoat and finish coat might, if properly applied without excessive brushing-out, have a total thickness of around 0.004-0.045". This is insufficient to take care of high spots of the order of 0.005" and an additional coat of paint is clearly required. Indeed, as a general rule, four coats on bare structural steel ought to be regarded as the minimum and, in most cases the relatively small increase in cost would be more than repaid by longer life.

Time Available for Painting

This is an important factor. Time is required for adequate preparation, for the application of a sufficient number of coats and, in many cases, for proper hardening or curing of the paint before exposure to attack. However, in industry, time is a valuable commodity in terms of production. Accordingly, there is a tendency to curtail maintenance painting time if it involves plant down-time. Even when plant is shut-down for general maintenance, painting is often regarded as relatively unimportant and the painting supervisor may find himself called upon to perform miracles on the day before the start-up. To reinforce a plea for more time for maintenance painting, it may be worth pointing out that neglect of this important task may well result in quite costly failures of structure or plant.
