โฆ Synopsis
The heat of formation of benzophenone oxide, Ph2C02, was measured using photoacoustic calorimetry. The enthalpy of the reaction Ph2CN2 + O2 + Ph2C02 + N2 was found to be -48.0 20.8 kcal mo1-l and AH,(Ph,CN,) was determined by measuring the reaction enthalpy for Ph,CN2 + EtOH + Ph,CHOEt + N, (-53.6 21.0 kcal mol-'). Taking hH,(PhCHOEt) = -10.6 kcal mol-' led to AHf(Ph2CN2) = 99.2 2 1.5 kcal mol-' and hence to AHf(Ph2C02) = 51.1 2 2.0 kcal mol-'. The results imply that the self-reaction of benzophenone oxide i.e., 2Ph2C0, + 2Ph2C0 + O2 is exothermic by -76.0 k4.0 kcal mol-'.
