β¦ Synopsis
The photo-induced substitution of a CO ligand has been used to prepare the halfsandwich complexes (Ξ· 3 -C 3 H 5 )V(CO) 4 [P(C 7 H 7 ) 3 ] (1), (Ξ· 5 -C 5 H 5 )V(CO) 3 [P(C 7 H 7 ) 3 ] (2), (Ξ· 7 -C 7 H 7 )V(CO) 2 [P(C 7 H 7 ) 3 ] ( 3), (Ξ· 6 -C 6 H 3 Me 3 )Cr(CO) 2 [P(C 7 H 7 ) 3 ] (4), and (Ξ· 5 -C 5 H 5 )Mn(CO) 2 [P(C 7 H 7 ) 3 ] (7), in which the olefinic phosphane is coordinated as a conventional two-electron ligand through the lone pair of electrons at phosphorus. Some analogues, which are permethylated at the aromatic ring (2*, 4*, 7*), were included for comparison. Subsequent photo-elimination of another CO group from 4 or 7 converts the olefinic phosphane into a chelating four-electron ligand, leading to (Ξ· 6 -C 6 H 3 Me 3 )Cr(CO)-[P(C 7 H 7 ) 2 (Ξ· 2 -C 7 H 7 )] ( 5) and (Ξ· 5 -C 5 H 5 )Mn(CO)[P(C 7 H 7 ) 2 (Ξ· 2 -

The olefinic phosphane P(C 7 H 7 ) 3 (5) behaves as a tetradentate tripod ligand in [RhCl{P(g 2 -C 7 H 7 ) 3 }] (6), using all 3 cyclohepta-2,4,6-trienyl substituents as g 2 -coordinating side-arms. Nucleophilic displacement of the one-electron chloro ligand by halides or pseudohalides to give [RhX{
Stepwise introduction of the potential tripod ligands tris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate (Tp\*) and tris(1cyclohepta-2,4,6-trienyl)phosphane into the coordination sphere of rhodium(I) leads mainly to [Tp\*Rh{P(C 7 H 7 ) 3 }] (4), in which Tp\* is linked to the rhodium through a single pyrazolyl gr
The first examples of g 1 -complexes of 1,2,4-triphospholes are reported in which the ring acts as a 2e and a 4e donor.
