✦ Synopsis

The failure of the Lcell to grow i n a medium containing galactose as the sole carbohydrate was found to be directly related to the initial pH of the medium. Excellent growth of L-M cultures in Eagle's minimum essential medium containing galactose instead of glucose was obtained by adjusting the medium to pH 6.2-6.8.

The pH range for optimal growth of WI-38 in Eagle's minimum essential medium varies with the carbohydrate utilized. Growth with glucose occurred only in the pH range 6.8-7.4. Glucose-free galactose supported growth only if the pH of the medium was adjusted to 6.4-6.8. Supplementing the galactose med

## Abstract The growth of L‐60TM cells (a suspension culture adapted L‐cell) on media composed of MEM (minimum essential medium (Eagle)) and bactopeptone autoclaved together or separately under a variety of conditions has been determined. It has been found that MEM autoclaved with 0.5% bactopeptone

The occurrence of L-galactose (L-Gal) was investigated in twelve preparations of snail galactans from nine different species. L-Gal (ll-15%) was found not only in members of the family Helicidae, a highly developed group among the Pulmonatu, but was detected also in a galactan of the oldest phylogen

## Abstract Fourteen mammalian cell strains were studied in the β€˜stirrer culture’. Fair to excellent growth was obtained with twelve of these strains while two strains failed to show evidence of proliferation. Growth curves, maximal population densities, and recovery following subculture of various
