✦ Synopsis

The stilbestrol-induced hamster kidney tumor retained hormone dependence in vivo. In order to elucidate the mode and site of hormone stimulation, tumors of the twelfth in vivo transplant generation as well as newly induced kidney tumors were explanted to monolayer cell cultures. Various concentrations of diethylstilbestrol failed to stimulate cell growth or prolong viability, and cells died after two to eight subcultures. This was not secondary to in vitro selection of a hormone-independent cell population, since hormone was required for growth of tumor recycled from cell culture to animals. The presence of an intact stroma seems to be a requisite for estrogen tumorigenesis in the hamster kidney.

## Abstract Tracheal tumors were induced by repeated intratracheal exposures to the carcinogen __N__‐nitroso‐__N__‐methylurea (NMU), using a catheter system previously described. Carcinogen concentrations of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0% were employed in 20 or 30 twice‐weekly exposures. Most of the tumors de
