✦ Synopsis

Several experiments are described which highlight the most important parameters that have to be kept under control to ensure a successful outcome. Subsequently, some instruments are presented which still have to be developed but of which the concepts have already been proved. Finally it is stressed that quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is certainly the most versatile spectroscopic technique, but that it is highly dependent upon the availability of high-intensity neutron sources and sophisticated instrumentation.

A ncutron quasi-lastic investigation of the plastic phase of a randomly orientated sample of \(n\)-nonadecane shows good agreement with a simple continuous rotational diffusion model of the molecule about its long axis. No quasi-clastic broadening is observed in the lower temperature phase.

Quasi-elastic scattering from agarose-water gels was measured using the new pulsed-source spectrometer IRIS. Correlation times characterising the water dynamics at temperatures between -20 and 55Β°C were determined and show two distinct regions. The relaxation times 7, are higher by a factor of 10 to
