✦ Synopsis
Extension of the study of the kinetics of the condensation polymerization of p-di(chloromethyl)benzene and benzene beyond the limitations imposed by gas chromatography has been made possible by the application of a computer-based method to experimental results obtained using gel permeation chromatography. The computed and experimental results have been found to agree sufficiently closely to provide support for the proposed kinetic model of the initial stages of reaction.
The model enables the effect of changes in initial concentrations of reactants to be studied and allows the course of the reaction to be predicted under conditions outside those experimentally observed.
In addition, the frequency of branching in reaction products can be computed; comparison of the results with those for the condensation with diphenylmethan¢ shows that the products in the benzene reaction are considerably more highly branched. Hence, it is possible to predict to some extent the effect of changes in nature and concentrations of reactants on the properties of the final polymer.
