The chemical transformation of santonin into an elemane bis-lactone structurally related to the antitumour compound vemolepin is reported. The transformation of ring A of santonin into a hemiacetal ~-lactone was achieved in eleven steps. The spectroscopic characteristics of the synthetic product obt
