Flow-uqectlon analysers for glucose and lactate were optlmlzed for the measurement of very low concentrations m complex fennentatlon media The analytes were enzymatlcally oxldlzed and the hydrogen peroxide formed was detected by chemllummescence The enzymes were lmmoblhsed on a nylon tube and by measurmg the flow-rate dependence of the conversIon of hydrogen peroxlde by catalase the performance of differently kmtted enzyme reactors was evaluated In the resultmg glucose and lactate analysers the hnuts of deternnnatlon m aqueous solutions were 50 pg I-' lactrc acid and 150 pg I-' glucose When measurmg glucose concentrations m the range 0 5-10 mg I-' the purity of the enzyme used rn the analyser must be high The analysers were used to study bacterIaI and yeast fermentations, m particular the product formation pattern at very low glucose concentrations and the nucrotxal preference for a-and p-glucose
