β¦ Synopsis
The role of genetic epidemiology in chronic disease research has, since the foundation of the field, varied considerably and has generally reflected the principles of either human genetics or epidemiology rather than a truly combined genetic epidemiologic approach. For example, methods employed in population genetics [Vogel and Motulsky, 1979; Li, 19781, such as segregation, linkage, and pedigree analyses, have been applied to evaluate the genetic susceptibility to chronic disease. Although these studies of families have contributed greatly to our understanding of the modes of inheritance of chronic diseases, they have not, in general, accounted for the roles of nongenetic risk factors in the etiology of these conditions. As a result, methodologic approaches designed specifically to incorporate environmental indices,

## Background: A large family of moroccan immigrants was investigated. in this family the father developed crohn's disease (cd) after moving from morocco to belgium and successively 4 of his 8 children subsequently developed cd. there was no previous history of familial cd. ## Methods: The family
We have analysed the pedigrees of 265 probands with Crohn disease, collected from a specialty clinic at the University of Dusseldorf. Complex segregation analysis suggests the presence of a recessive gene with incomplete penetrance for susceptibility to the disease with no residual causes of family

## Abstract The analyses of data provided for the cardiovascular disease section of Genetic Analysis Workshop 8 are briefly summarized. Methods using twin, segregation, and linkage analyses are used to determine, characterize, and localize genetic components involved in the etiology of cardiovascul
